    GENERAL CONTEXT

    Médecins Sans Frontières is an international independent medical-humanitarian organization, which offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation.

    MSF is a civil society initiative that brings together individuals committed to the assistance of other human beings in crisis. As such MSF is by choice an association.
    Each individual working with MSF does it out of conviction and is ready to uphold the values and principles of MSF.

    The MSF movement is built around five operational directorates supported by MSF’s 21 sections, 24 associations and other offices together worldwide. MSF OCBA is one of those directorates. The operations are implemented by field teams and the mission coordination teams; together with the organizational units based in Barcelona, Athens and decentralised in Nairobi, Dakar and Amman. The field operations are guided and supported by 5 Operational Cells, the Emergency Unit and other departments supporting operations, including Projects & IT.

    GENERAL OBJECTIVE

    Defining, coordinating and monitoring all the HACEHP activities in the project and promoting MSF services according to MSF principles, protocols and standards in order to increase the knowledge of the target population around their health, the support of preventive activities and the collaboration to improve the services.

    Being a Humanitarian Anthropologist, community engagement/health promoter is an energetic, exciting job. From a mobile app campaign to work with survivors of sexual violence to access care, through to engaging with the different communities in dialogue related to the health issues MSF address in refugee camps, health promoters are the bridge with the communities both inside and outside the walls of the medical facilities, vital to ensure the active participation of the affected in MSF projects, contributing to make them accessible and relevant to the communities they provide for.

    RESPONSIBILITES

    • HACEHP work in projects all over the world to ensure people are placed at the center of medical humanitarian aid at all stages of the project cycle.
    • HACEHP develop strategies to address together with the communities a wide range of health issues, from sexual violence care through to Ebola prevention.
    • It’s an exciting and diverse role and you would be responsible for some or all of the following:
    • Conducting qualitative assessments related to the health seeking behavior pathway for specific diseases and the factors that condition it.
    • Developing a localized medico-operational community engagement and health promotion strategy, or a risk communications strategy in case of an outbreak.
    • Coordinate the implementation of the different components of the strategy to contribute to meet the defined expected results of the project. Among the different activities there might be: promotion of MSF medical services, hygiene promotion, engagement with key people in the HSB for maternal health to together develop a monitoring and referral system, etc.
    • Building capacity of a local team to implement, monitor and supervise a community engagement/health promotion strategy.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    Essential requirements

    • Formal education in Anthropology, Sociology or relevant social sciences.
    • Substantial post education experience working in the field of Health Education and Promotion, and community engagement.
    • Broad experience in working with communities: public health, development or humanitarian aid.
    • Experience in supervising, managing and training others.
    • Able to work well as a part of a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team.
    • Willing to work in unstable areas and ability to cope in a difficult and unpredictable environment.
    • Availability of 12 months.
    • Flexible and able to manage stress.
    • Fluency in English and French. Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese desirable.Desired requirements.

    Assets

    • Experience in Humanitarian/development Aid project implementation and coordination
    • Familiarity with tropical diseases / infectious diseases
    • Previous experience in a similar role with another non-governmental organization (NGO).
    • Previous experience in a similar role in an unstable environment
    • Knowledge of other relevant languages.

    WHAT WE OFFER

    • Preparatory course before leaving to the field.
    • Legal contract for the duration of the mission.
    • The gross basic salary is approximately €1,300 per month during first missions and for positions of lesser responsibility. The salary is regularly reviewed according to the length of time in the organization and the experience acquired. The chance to develop professionally in an international organization.
