icddr,b invites applications from suitable candidates for our present requirement and to MAKE A PANEL for the position of Clinical Fellow with Hospitals under the Nutrition and Clinical Services Division. The appointment will be made on fellowship basis for 1 year which is renewable depending on performance and availability of funds.

Objective: The fellowship programme is designed to provide thorough clinical training in Paediatrics and Internal medicine with a special emphasis on diarrhoeal diseases, ARI, malnutrition and exposure to research methods. The fellows learn through treating patients, participating in the ward rounds and clinical meetings or seminars. The training programme is designed to prepare the fellows to build professional carrier in clinical research. Successful completion of the fellowship programme will help to achieving eligibility criteria for clinical training to FCPS, MCPS or DCH level. The trainees are required to perform shift duties covering days and nights. They might need to perform long duty hours. Training at the icddr,b is recognised by the University of Dhaka for DCH and by the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons (BCPS) for MCPS and FCPS; recognition of 6 months for Medicine (after 1 year of fellowship) and 1 year for paediatrics (after 18 months of fellowship) will be provided. Candidates after successful completion of fellowship training will be given preference to pursue a career in clinical research.

Job profile:

The specific areas of responsibilities are detailed below:

• Clinical Management: Admit and evaluate new patients and decide appropriate action (e.g. treatment and discharge, or admission into clinical units); Conduct thorough physical examination and gather detailed patient history; Request and administer tests, if required (e.g. blood test, x-ray); Interpret test results; Consult with senior doctors (if required); Diagnose condition and prescribe treatment; Manage complicated cases; Regular follow-up of admitted patients daily to review response to treatment; Document all patient interactions using computers; Review complicated cases with senior doctors during their daily morning and evening rounds; Take actions on recommendations made by senior doctors; Coordinate patient-care activities with nurses and other hospital staff. Supervise and guide other members in the team for day-to-day tasks; Support clinical research work in the hospital in order to ensure proper clinical management.
• Knowledge Sharing: Train other staffs in basic rules and procedures followed at icddr,b hospitals; Coach junior staffs on the job on an ongoing basis; Prepare and present reports on cases, incidents, initiatives etc. during team meetings and department meetings in order to share experience(s) and learning with team members.
• Professional Development: Attend all training/clinical sessions; Actively take part in Develop and demonstrate interest in a particular specialty; Seek opportunities to be exposed to research activities of the unit in order to continually develop clinically and acquire new skills.mentoring activities organized by icddr,b.

Requirements:

Education and relevant experience:

• MBBS degree recognized by Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council with good with completion of one year internship.
• A minimum of six month’s training either in Pediatrics or Internal Medicine recognized for pursuing post- graduate studies, such as DCH and FCPS is preferred; however, this may be relaxed in case of candidates having added qualifications e.g. MPH with experience in research.

Duration: Duration of fellowship is for the period of 1 year. However, it may be extended for further period depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Stipend & Facilities: Monthly stipend amounting to Tk. 42050 and free transportation to and from the duty stations, subject to Centre’s rules and availability of transports.

Evaluation & Certification: The progress of the Fellows will be monitored and evaluated. On successful completion of training and final evaluation, the Fellow will be awarded certificates.

Prospects: After completion of the program, the Fellows may apply against any other suitable positions at the Centre. However, such employment is not guaranteed. The selected Fellows will not be eligible for any other fellowship program at the Centre.
