    • Support the Office in promoting human rights in the area of Democratic Space and rights-holder’s meaningful participation in laws, policies, and decision-making processes. 
    • Support the coordination of monitoring activities of human rights defenders, and follow-up of emblematic cases and collaborate with the national and regional protection mechanisms.  
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of a strategy to improve the protection of human rights defenders and journalists and provide expert advice and technical assistance to state institutions, national protection mechanisms for human rights defenders, parliament, communities and other stakeholders, in the development, reform and implementation of legislation, policies and programs.
    • Cooperate in the organization of seminars, workshops and consultations at the national and local level to promote knowledge of standards and jurisprudence in the area of human rights defenders, democratic space and people’s participation.
    • Support the dialogue between the civil society and the institutions and provide assistance to the State, the national protection mechanisms for human rights defenders, and to Civil Society Organizations.  
    • Provide capacity building to national NGOs, NHRI, National Protection Mechanism and human rights defenders. 
    • Work with the UNCT in Honduras to integrate human rights, including their gender dimensions in their programs and promote the use of a HRBA.  
    • Contribute to the development of papers, briefings, advocacy materials, presentations and methodological tools to promote awareness and understanding of the rights of human rights defenders.
    • Conduct human rights monitoring activities including through field missions and engagement at community level and provide advice to OHCHR and UN colleagues.
    • Assist in other tasks as required by the achievement of objectives and the mandate of OHCHR-Honduras. 

     

    • Professionalism – Very good knowledge of the international and regional human rights standards and their practical implementation and proven knowledge and experience in the area of indigenous people’s rights. Demonstrated ability to analyze proposed norms and policies for compliance with international human rights standards. Ability to relate human rights issues and perspectives, including gender issues, to indigenous issues and to related political, social, economic and humanitarian programs in the country. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.  
    • Communication – Good communication (spoken, written and presentational) skills, including the ability to produce a variety of written reports. 
    • Planning and Organizing – Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to establish priorities and to plan coordinate and monitor related activities. Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently. 
    • Teamwork – Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. 
    • Technological awareness – proficiency in use of relevant software applications and systems (particularly Spreadsheets, Word-processing, and Presentation software) required.
    • A Master´s degree in law, human rights, political science or international relations is required. 
    • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience at national and/or international levels in the human rights area and protection of HRD/WHRD and journalists at risks is required. Proven expertise in gender mainstreaming and women’s rights promotion is highly desirable.
    • Experience working with community organizations is highly desirable.
    • Experience working with the UN or an international organization will be an advantage. 
    • Fluency in Spanish and working knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is required.
